Dal Fry Recipe Dhaba Style
Salt to taste
Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Lemon wedges
Instructions:
Rinse the lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for about 30 minutes. Drain the water before cooking.
In a pressure cooker or a large pot, add the lentils along with 3 cups of water. Cook on medium heat until the lentils are soft and mushy. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 3-4 whistles. If using a pot, it may take around 20-25 minutes. Set aside.
In a separate pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds until they become fragrant.
Add the chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn golden brown.
Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chilies. Cook for a minute or until the raw aroma of the ginger and garlic disappears.
Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they become soft and mushy.
Reduce the heat to low and add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for a minute to allow the spices to release their flavors.
Add the cooked lentils to the pan and mix everything together. Add salt to taste and adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more water if desired. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together.
Once the dal is done, garnish with freshly chopped cilantro leaves.
Serve hot with steamed rice, naan bread, or roti. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the dal before eating for an extra tangy flavor.
Enjoy your delicious Dal Fry!
