Religious Significance of Rath Yatra-

In Hinduism, the ancient city of Puri is considered very sacred as it is the abode of Lord Jagannath, in this temple, not only his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, but also other deities are present along with Jagannath, who is called the Nath of the entire world. According to mythological belief, once Lord Krishna’s sister Subhadra accompanied him and Balarama to the city. He expressed his desire. The two brothers then set off on a city tour with their beloved sister Subhadra. In the annual Rath Yatra, Lord Sri Krishna’s elder brother Balarama’s chariot is at the front and Goddess Subhadra’s chariot is at the front. Lord Jagannath’s chariot moves backwards in this holy chariot procession.

On the day of the Rath Yatra, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are brought out from the Jagannath Temple in Puri and placed in their respective chariots. The chariots are then pulled by ropes, which are considered sacred, to the Gundicha Temple, located about three kilometers away.

The journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple is symbolic and represents Lord Jagannath’s journey to his aunt’s house, as per the tradition. It is believed that Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra visit their aunt, the Goddess Gundicha, during this time.
