Mahalaya Amavasya Start : The last day of Mahalaya’s Pitrupaksha, Pitrupaksha is the time to pay respects by offering Tarpana (water) to the souls of departed ancestors according to Shastra.

* Amavasya Tithi will be from September 13 (25 Ashwin), night 9/26/9 to September 14 (26 Ashwin), night 10/49/44.
Mahalaya Amavasya significance
Piturapaksha lasts 15 days before Mahalaya. There are various rituals in Hinduism surrounding Pitru Tarpan at the end of Pitru Paksha before Uma’s death. According to the scriptures, if a deceased’s Shraddha is done, his soul is soothed and that soul is able to attain liberation.

Tarpan method in Mahalaya
Many people perform tarpan on this day with the help of priest at Ganga Ghat. But if you can’t do that, you can do tarpan at home.
On this day wake up early in the morning and take a bath and wear clean white clothes.
Then prepare kheer, puri and vegetables.
This food is first fed to the Brahmins and then he himself eats the Prasad…!!!
